Containing not only two units of North Cascades National Park but also the Ross Lake and Lake Chelan National Recreation Areas, this 1,069-square-mile park complex contains towering mountains, gushing rivers, stunning glaciers and sprawling forests. Hiking is easily the most popular activity within the park, whether it's a short hike for the family to enjoy or an arduous multi-day backpacking trip into the wilderness. Mount Baker is relatively easy to reach, with trails running around and up the rugged volcanic mountain. Rock climbing is made even more difficult than usual with the glaciers that dot the park, creating a truly challenging trip for experienced climbers to enjoy. Ross Lake provides a haven for boating, fishing and kayaking while the Skagit and Stehekin Rivers are beloved for their challenging rapids and used by many rafting tour companies. Dozens of campgrounds dot the park, with some allowing car camping while others are accessible only by foot or boat. Stretching around the North Cascades Highway, the park continues over more than 50 miles to the south from its northern edge at the Canada border.
